Making a case for character specific ranked matchmaking to support a healthy player base#884

T

Please consider rethinking how we queue in ranked. I know this topic has been covered before but I love this game and I hate seeing friends whom I recommended this game to (who also loved playing it) drop it because they can’t cut it in online.

Counterpicking and reverse-counterpicking is fine in tournament, a surprise counterpick is exciting there because those players probably know eachother and how they’ll play. In online its just infuriating to think you’ll have a fun off-meta match but they just win round 1 and pick an S-tier round 2 anyway. Allowing mid match counterpicking in ranked leaves no room for low or mid-tier characters, the only safe option to avoid getting cheesed is maining S-tiers which is why they’re everywhere in the mid ranks.

Character specific rankings let players specialize or experiment with new characters without getting punished for it. The lower ranks shouldn’t feel like crabs in a bucket, it should be a place where people can learn the game.

Also, casual is not a safe place for experimentation or new players, its just where high level players go to play once they’ve reached their desired rank. No new players are finding fun even matches there or learning anything.

there are so many reason that speak for char specific ranks. i have listed and explained them countless times. while there is only one why not, which was counter picks. And now you found a legitimate reason why even counter picks isn’t even a valid argument for keeping a global ranking.
i really wish the devs would finally acknowledge some of their mistakes, like having no char based rank, and at least give us a promise that they will change things for the better.

Blah blah blah I hate the devs wah wah wah. Dude shut up. I do agree that char specific ranks would be better, but it’s not due to switching to an S tier? Every char is viable I don’t even know what your talking about. The games version of counter picking isn’t actually the tournament standard which makes it kinda an akward implementation. If we wanted to keep ranked the way it is the winning player should either be forced to stay the same char, or have their pick be public, like it is in bracket. As it stands, you can switch chars to counterpick the opponent while they also switch, so your counterpick is wasted and there’s no real point to doing it. I think char ranks but the mmr for unranked characters is like 1/2 ranks below your highest would be a good way to prevent smurfing and probably the best way to do char based ranked, but also it’s whatever.

Really not trying to insult the devs. Rivals 2 is like one my top 5 multiplayer games of all time. Just trying to point out why a lot of the problems I’m seeing people have with matchmaking might be alleviated by character specific ranks.

Obviously we dont want to be queuing top level players into low ranks just because they are on a new character, thats what placements are for.

Sorry that part wasn’t directed at you, that was directed purely at zoolz8l who likes to insult the devs intelligence in every post they make.

Yeah I don’t think char specific ranks would solve all of the matchmaking problems, or even help a lot, but I do think it couldn’t hurt. Keeping people invested in multiple characters would put at least a couple more people into the ranked pool, which could help. I think switching to 4 wins / 10 losses for placements might help, but that might also be demoralizing idk
