but I also think adding foot sound effects would further increase the game’s polish.

This is one of the features we definitely want to get in the game eventually but unfortunately we face a very unique issue that greatly raises the cost/potential scope creep with this one: Rivals of Aether 2 is a game where the majority of characters are non-humanoid in different sizes and shapes.
Footsteps can have a surprisingly big scope by default, having to account for different shoes and terrains but when you’re adding footsteps for humanoid characters there are a bunch of ways to reduce that scope creep by taking cost-reducing measures (sharing footsteps between different characters, relying on existing libraries and so on…) but the majority of those would not be available for us.
In the end this will definitely come but we are being very careful with the timing so it doesn’t strain our team whenever new characters/skins require us to make new bespoke footsteps with multiple terrains. Unfortunately that means we’re unlikely to be able to get this feature this year.

While I appreciate wanting to “do it right the first time”, I think there’s an argument for “something is better than nothing”. Even something as primitive as “every character has either “light” or “heavy” footsteps” might be good enough for most players to be satisfied, and then you could incrementally improve it rather than try to get it all done at once.

Or maybe you prefer to get it all done at once, which I get (because that’s me).
