Reconsider Maypul Uair changes#81

Maypul nerfs are deserved and I’m 100% down for nerfing her recovery, but i feel like the Uair change was a little unconsiderate.

Gaining height from a Walljump Uair was a staple trick in the Maypul’s sleeve since forever. Uair is one of the most unique moves in platfighters and is really fun to use.

But now since the height you gain from it after a WJ is practically negligible, it’s just not worth going for a lot of the times. I’m down for an attempt to make Maypul more accessible but this should not invalidate the efforts of stronger players, since Maypul has always been a difficult character that rewards your investment into her.

In the patch notes, the provided reasoning was: “…too important to Maypul’s recovery plan and it’s not an intuitive input for new players”. But by doing this change, you incentivise people to use B-reverse Nspecial instead of WJ Uair to get max height from UpB recovery, which is even more difficult and unintuitive.

Besides that, this change also affected the “Shorthop Uair Autocancel” trick, that allowed Maypul to be actionable in the air before landing, giving you access to Doublejump, Tether or Waveland. Tricks like that is something Maypul players value the most and this is the main reason of my complaint about this change.

The reason people play Maypul is because she’s a fast rushdown archetype with difficult combos and removing things like that really disincentives me from playing her. Maypuls spend lots of time discovering and practicing things like that and removing this feels like a piece of her was ripped off.

What I ask for is a compromise to it. Here’s my suggestions on what can be changed:

A) Reduce the height of a Walljump (and revert Uair height). This would make both WJ Uair AND B-reverse seed weaker, while keeping the Shorthop Uair Autocancel.

B) Make Up Air initial speed boost equal to 6.5 or something like that to keep the Shorthop Uair Autocancel while still nerfing the height of Uair (it was 7 cm/f and changed to 6 cm/f)

C) Reduce the endlag of Uair (don’t revert Uair height)

I should also mention that this drastically nerfed the endlag of this move if you don’t hitfall it after shorthop.
Before it was full duration of Uair + 4f of landing lag.
Now it’s almost full duration of Uair + 10f landing lag.
Giving it ~5 more frames of landing lag if you don’t hitfall it which is significant.

While Zetter, Ranno and Wrastor can have 2 aerials that end before falling after shorthop each just fine which seems a little unfair to me.
